Illinois Redistricting - Compare Maps

The new maps for congressional districts, state house, state senate and Chicago wards are now all official.  Are you interested in seeing how the new maps overlay with the old maps, or with each other?.

I've been tinkering with a lot of this new stuff and while trying to learn it I've put together this little app that allows you to overlay various maps to see how they are different.  You can look at the new ward, congressional, state house, or state senate boundaries and see how they compare to the old boundaries, or with each other or even with precinct or county boundaries.

You can click on any district/area/region of the map and a popup will appear to tell you what you clicked on. If both layers are loaded the popup will (should) only tell you what's on the top layer.

I'm not an expert at this yet so let me know if you see any errors.  You can email me at ScottTKennedy.  It's a yahoo account.  Or you can find me on Twitter at @ScottTKennedy.

Up next, moving two decades worth of vote total maps onto Google maps. Coming soon.

Note, on the precinct map you may have to zoom in a bit to get all of them to appear. They're all there though.

Also of note, some of the borders appear close to others, as though they may have been intended to overlap. It's hard to say for sure whether certain lines are supposed to match up and do not, or if the variance was intentional on the part of the mapmakers. I've found some examples each way. It's worth noting that I got the boundaries on the Chicago wards from the Chicago data vault, the county, precinct and old (congress, state rep, state senate) from the US census TIGER files and the new district info from the Illinois redistricting website.
